Belgium Football League Playoffs

The Jupiler Pro League, Belgium’s top-tier football league, incorporates a unique playoff system to determine the final standings, including the league champion and European competition qualifiers. Here’s a detailed explanation of how the playoffs work:

Regular Season

  • Structure: The league consists of 16 teams.
  • Matches: Each team plays 30 matches (home and away against each other team).
  • Points System: Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and no points for a loss.

Playoff Phase

After the regular season, the league transitions into a playoff phase, which is divided into two main playoff groups:

Championship Playoff (Playoff 1)

  • Qualification: The top six teams from the regular season qualify.
  • Points Adjustment: Points from the regular season are halved (and rounded up if necessary).
  • Matches: Each team plays 10 matches (home and away against each other team in the playoff group).
  • Objective: Determines the league champion and places for European competitions (Champions League and Europa League).

Europa League Playoff (Playoff 2)

  • Qualification: Teams placed 7th to 12th in the regular season qualify.
  • Structure: These six teams are divided into two groups of three, and each group plays a round-robin format (home and away).
  • Winners: The winners of each group face each other in a two-legged playoff.
  • Final Qualification: The winner of this playoff then faces the fourth-placed (or fifth-placed if the Belgian Cup winner is among the top four) team from the Championship Playoff in a single match for a spot in the Europa League.

Relegation

  • Bottom Team: The team finishing in 16th place after the regular season is automatically relegated to the Belgian First Division B.
  • Relegation Playoff: Occasionally, there is a relegation playoff involving the team finishing 15th in the Pro League and teams from the second tier, but this depends on the specific rules for the season.
