Mason Greenwood is a free man and could return to action following charges of rape against him. The Manchester United forward had all charges dropped in a case relating to allegations of attempted rape.

Rape cases are not a rare phenomenon in football. Several top stars have been victims of rape allegations, and while some have been lucky to beat the rap, others have not been fortunate.

Rape is not an offence taken with levity. It is a big deal when there are accusations of the heinous crime against a footballer.

Several names come to mind when there are discussions of rape. Neymar was fortunate to beat the rap as there was evidence that his accuser was lying. The latest high-profile case is Benjamin Mendy, who also beat six counts of rape allegations against him. However, the former Monaco defender has a massive job shaking off the tag of a sex offender.

Another alleged sex offender also beat the rap and is about to return to action. England international Mason Greenwood was in the eye of the storm after tapes surfaced of his sexual relationship with his girlfriend. After a year in limbo, the deviant attacker who plays for Manchester United star, was let off the hook.

Greenwood discharged after rape allegations

It is hard for young footballers who have hit fame and money early to control themselves. A tape surfaced online about a year ago showing Greenwood to be a sex-starved, out-of-control and coercive predator. The recording showed Greenwood did not care about the feelings of his girlfriend.

Following a year-long litigation against the Man United star, Mason Greenwood has had all charges dropped in a case relating to allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour. United took the hard stance of suspending Greenwood indefinitely when the accusations came to light.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 but released on bail. He was back in the custody of the police after breaching his bail conditions and being charged by prosecutors. With his court date set in November for February 2023, the Man United attacker has now had all charges against him dropped.

United stall on Greenwood return amid his relief

Following the dropping of charges against him, Greenwood made a statement expressing his relief over the matter. The Man United striker thanked his family, loved ones and friends for their support during the trying period. Greenwood is glad the case is over but refused to make further comments.

Meanwhile, Manchester United also released a statement on Thursday concerning the Greenwood affair. The club noted the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service to drop all charges against Mason Greenwood. However, they insist on conducting their process to determine their next step. The club claims that there will be no further comments until the process is complete.

A statement from Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, Head of Public Protection for Greater Manchester Police, reads:

Criminal proceedings against a 21-year-old man in connection with an investigation opened in January 2022 have, today (Thursday, 2 February 2023), been discontinued.
