Kylian Mbappe injured his knee in a Ligue 1 game on Wednesday. The France international could now miss the Champions League first-leg tie against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
The season has reached the business stage, with matches coming in thick and fast. The top clubs will need depth in their squad to play a pivotal role in their campaign. There are so many matches to be played across different competitions, and every player will be required to contribute towards their success.
Paris Saint-Germain might be coasting in Ligue 1, but their position has not been without its upheavals. Their results are not a reflection of the reality on the pitch, as they have had to work for every point. The Paisiens have had to dig deep to prove their credentials as they lead the table in Ligue 1.
PSG have an attacking trident that has struck fear into every opposition before them. With Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar leading the Paris giants, it is arduous to stop them. PSG will go into the next three weeks of action with a change. A member of their attacking trident, Kylian Mbappe, will be on the sidelines due to injury.
Mbappe’s injury confirmed
The Champions League round-of-16 matches are on the horizon, but PSG have received a massive blow. The Paris giants were treated to unpalatable news, as they have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe is injured and will be out for three weeks. The import of this news is that Mbappe would miss the first leg of their Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich.
The two teams will rehash the 2020 Champions League final that Bayern Munich won by a lone goal. Without Kylian Mbappe, the Bavarians would heave a sigh of relief, as his pace was a source of worry for Bayern in 2020. The young Frenchman has been in fiery form this season, and his absence could be telling for the Parisians.
Mbappe picked up the knee and thigh injury in a Ligue 1 tie against Montpellier. A tackle by Montpellier midfielder Leo Leroy has caused the striker to be on the sidelines for three weeks. Mbappe had to leave the pitch in the 21st minute as PSG won 3-1.
Injury update for Mbappe
The France international had to undergo scans on Thursday morning, which revealed the extent of Mbappe’s injury. Mbappe had missed a penalty during the game but left the pitch after 20 minutes. The Frenchman clutched his left thigh as he left the pitch. PSG coach Christophe Galtier claims that Mbappe also injured his knee.
Galtier said it’s a knock to the knee, but it hurts behind the thigh. Mbappe will miss the high-profile game against Marseille in the French Cup (Wednesday). He will also miss the tie against Monaco in Ligue 1 (Feb. 11). The Champions League tie against Bayern Munich comes up at the Parc des Princes on Feb. 14. Mbappe is also set to miss that tie.
Sergio Ramos also received an injury in the game against Montpellier. The Paris club gave an update on his status. The former Real Madrid defender will undergo further tests after he left the field with a groin injury.
