1871: The first FA Cup competition is proposed by C.W. Alcock in the offices of The Sportsman newspaper on July 20. The first FA Cup games are played on November 11, with four first-round matches taking place.

1872: The first FA Cup final is played on March 16, with Wanderers beating Royal Engineers 1-0 at The Oval. The trophy is made by Martin, Hall & Co. of Sheffield for a cost of £20.

1873: Wanderers retain the FA Cup after receiving a bye to the final where they beat Oxford University to retain the Cup.

1883: The Football Association purchases the rights to the FA Cup for £20,000, ensuring the competition remains under the control of the governing body.

1888: The Football League is formed, with the FA Cup continuing to be played alongside the league competition.

1914: The last FA Cup final before World War I is played, with Burnley beating Liverpool 1-0 at Crystal Palace.

1923: The first FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium is played between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United, with Bolton winning 2-0.
