Getting around in Qatar through modes of public transportation has proven to be easy, efficient and relatively inexpensive.

Qatar Metro

Metro Trains

Doha’s Metro underground railway has three lines (red, green & gold) which cover every part of the city a visitor could wish to visit. The entire system is spotlessly clean, efficient and very safe. Platform doors are synchronized with the train doors and only open once a train has arrived at the station.

The red line (18 stops) goes from the north in Lusail to the south in Wakra with a branch-line to Hamad International Airport; the green line (11 stops) runs east to west from Al Mansoura to Al Riffa and the gold line (11 stops) goes from Ras Bu Abboud in the east to Al Aziziyah in the west. All three intersect at the Msheireb station.

A standard day pass on the Metro system costs 6 QAR (about $1.50 USD), and offers unlimited travel for 24 hours on all the underground lines and free connecting metrolink busses.

During the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, Metro times were extended – fans with match tickets can get free Metro rides. The stations are very near to the football stadiums and directions are clearly marked.

By 2020, trains will run 20 hours a day with average times of 3 minutes during peak hours, 5 minutes during off-peak hours and 7 to 8 minutes from 23:00 to 01:00. They plan to extend and accommodate train times for the FIFA World Cup football matches in 2022.

Taxis

My personal experience with taxis in Doha is that they are readily available and relatively inexpensive in comparison to other major metropolitan cities. Taxis can be easily hailed in the street and you rarely have to wait too long before one appears.

The most common are the Government-run Karwa taxis (turquoise & off-white), which charge by the meter, Larger groups of visitors can order taxis with up to 7 seats or choose form one of multiple private companies which offer Limousine services; for those more tech-minded, Ubers are also available and convenient for those accustomed to the mobile application.
